Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary care that blends modern clinical diagnostics with natural, restorative therapies, and looks for the underlying cause of a problem rather than only quieting the symptom. At Pure Body Health it is practiced by Arizona-licensed naturopathic physicians (NDs), not non-physician practitioners: they perform the exam, order and interpret your labs, and prescribe when it is appropriate.

Here is the honest part: this can serve as your primary care or complement the care you already have. We coordinate with your other providers, use conventional diagnostics, and prescribe medications when they are indicated. Root-cause work takes time, results vary from person to person, and a licensed physician decides what fits you. Please never stop a prescribed medication without discussing it with the prescriber.

▶Physician-reviewed

Yes, your naturopathic doctor is a licensed physician.

Your care is led by Dr. Sarah Stone, ND (AZ Naturopathic License #15-1496) and Dr. Scott Maymon, ND, MPH (AZ Naturopathic License #15-1497). In Arizona, a naturopathic physician (ND) completes a four-year doctoral medical program at an accredited school and passes national board examinations. Both trained at the accredited Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine (now Sonoran University) in Tempe and have served the Phoenix East Valley since 2015. They are trained in both conventional diagnostics and natural therapeutics, and they coordinate with your other providers.

▶The Approach

Root-Cause Care, by Doctors Trained in Both Worlds

Conventional medicine is essential for acute problems, emergencies, surgery, and active disease, and we use its diagnostics every day. Naturopathic medicine adds a different focus. Rather than asking only which drug will quiet a symptom, it looks for why a system is out of balance and supports the body's own ability to restore itself, using the least invasive, most effective options first. We use both, and we coordinate with your care team.

Because our physicians are trained in conventional clinical science and natural therapeutics, they can order and read the same diagnostics as any physician, recognize when a problem needs conventional or specialist care, and choose from a broader set of tools when a natural, root-cause approach fits. That combination, real medical training with a whole-person lens, is the heart of what we do.

The goal is not more testing or more prescriptions. It is the right testing to answer the right questions, and the least invasive path that works.

▶What Guides Us

The Six Principles of Naturopathic Medicine

These are the foundations every naturopathic physician is trained in, and they shape how we build your plan.

A licensed naturopathic physician in consultation with a patient in South Tempe, AZ

First, do no harm

Use the most effective, least invasive options needed to support your health (Primum Non Nocere).

Find and treat the cause

Look beyond isolated symptoms to the underlying cellular, metabolic, and hormonal drivers (Tolle Causam).

The healing power of nature

Support and work with the body's own ability to heal (Vis Medicatrix Naturae).

Doctor as teacher

Educate and partner with you so you can take an active role in your health (Docere).

Treat the whole person

Consider the interplay of physiology, genetics, environment, lifestyle, and stress, including how stress is experienced (Tolle Totum).

Prevention

Assess risk and susceptibility to help prevent chronic problems before they take hold (Praevenire).

▶Sound Familiar?

When You Want a Doctor Who Looks for Why

Many of our patients come to us after feeling unheard or unwell despite "normal" results. You may recognize some of these:

  • Chronic fatigue that rest does not fix
  • "Your labs are normal," but you still feel off
  • Hormone or thyroid symptoms brushed aside
  • Gut issues: bloating, reflux, irregularity
  • Stubborn weight or metabolic changes
  • Joint or musculoskeletal pain you would rather not mask
  • Brain fog, low mood, or poor sleep
  • Passed between specialists with no plan that connects
  • Wanting a natural-first, root-cause option
  • Wanting prevention and a doctor who has time to listen

▶What Naturopathic Care Covers Here

One Practice, Many Tools

Naturopathic medicine is the umbrella over most of what we do. Depending on your evaluation, your plan may draw on any of these, and each links to a dedicated page where we go deeper.

Functional Medicine

Our everyday, systems-biology approach to finding root causes and building a measurable plan. More on functional medicine.

Hormones & BHRT

Testing and support for perimenopause, menopause, low testosterone, thyroid, and adrenal balance. Some hormone therapies are FDA-approved; compounded bio-identical hormones are not, and are used under a physician's direction. More on hormone health.

Metabolic Health & Weight

Lab-based metabolic care that can include GLP-1 medications when they are clinically appropriate, inside a monitored plan with muscle-preserving nutrition and physician check-ins. More on medical weight loss.

Gut & Microbiome

For IBS, SIBO, reflux, and "leaky gut," we evaluate the microbiome, food sensitivities, and gut lining to address inflammatory triggers at the source. More on GI health.

Regenerative & Pain

Options like PRP, prolotherapy, peptides, and other regenerative injections to support joints and connective tissue rather than relying on repeated steroid shots. Several of these are used off-label. More on our pain care.

Environmental Medicine

When warranted, we assess environmental exposures such as mold-related mycotoxins and heavy metals, and support your body's own clearance and liver function, using testing to inform your plan rather than to diagnose on its own. More on environmental medicine.

Clinical Nutrition & Botanicals

Food-as-medicine, targeted nutrition, and professional-grade botanical and nutrient formulas chosen to support your systems. These are dietary supplements, not FDA-evaluated to treat disease.

IV & Ozone Therapies

IV nutrient therapy to support hydration and recovery, and, when indicated, ozone-based therapies. Ozone therapies are naturopathic treatments that are not FDA-approved; whether they fit you is a physician's decision. More on IV therapy. Your physician recommends only what fits your history, exam, and labs. Several therapies here are used off-label or are dietary supplements, testing informs your plan rather than diagnosing on its own, and none is a cure.

▶How It Fits Together

Naturopathic and Conventional Medicine, Side by Side

These are not rivals. Conventional medicine is essential for acute and emergency care and active disease; naturopathic medicine focuses on the root causes behind chronic, complex symptoms. We use both, and we coordinate with your existing care.

Functional medicine is the day-to-day approach we practice within naturopathic medicine; see our functional medicine page for that in detail.

▶Why Pure Body Health

Licensed, Root-Cause, and Coordinated

"Naturopath" and "holistic practitioner" are broad terms. Here is what a licensed, physician-led naturopathic practice adds.

Licensed physicians

Elsewhere: "naturopath" or "holistic practitioner" can mean a non-physician with far less training. Your care is led by Arizona-licensed naturopathic physicians who can order and read labs, prescribe when indicated, and refer when needed.

Root cause, whole person

Elsewhere: a supplement for each symptom, with little diagnostic depth. We look for the shared drivers behind your symptoms and build one connected plan around what your labs actually show.

Time to be heard

Elsewhere: a brief, high-volume visit that ends before your story does. A 60 to 90 minute first visit that maps your whole history, because complex problems need context.

Coordinated, not either-or

Elsewhere: "natural instead of" your regular care, or being told it is all in your head. We work alongside your other providers, use conventional diagnostics, and never ask you to stop a prescribed medication on your own.

▶Next step

Start with a consultation.

Bring your questions. You will get an honest read on whether this is the right fit for you, what a plan looks like, and what it costs, with no obligation to book.

▶FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary care that blends modern clinical diagnostics with natural, restorative therapies. Instead of asking only which drug will quiet a symptom, it looks for the underlying cause and supports the body's own ability to heal, guided by principles like treating the whole person and doing no harm. At Pure Body Health it is practiced by licensed naturopathic physicians, it supports your general wellness, and it can serve as your primary care or complement the specialists you already see.

Is a naturopathic doctor a real doctor?

In Arizona, yes. A licensed naturopathic physician (ND) completes a four-year, doctoral-level medical program at an accredited naturopathic medical school and passes national board examinations (NPLEX). Your care at Pure Body Health is led by Dr. Sarah Stone, ND and Dr. Scott Maymon, ND, MPH, both trained at the accredited Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine (now Sonoran University) in Tempe and Arizona-licensed. Their training covers both conventional clinical science and natural therapeutics.

Are naturopathic doctors licensed in Arizona?

Yes. Arizona licenses naturopathic physicians through its Naturopathic Physicians Medical Board. Our physicians hold active Arizona licenses (Dr. Stone #15-1496, Dr. Maymon #15-1497) and are authorized to perform exams, order and interpret labs and imaging, and prescribe when medically appropriate.

Do naturopathic doctors prescribe medications?

Yes. Arizona-licensed naturopathic physicians have prescription authority. We use pharmaceuticals strategically, prioritizing options that work with the body's own physiology when that is reasonable, and we coordinate with your other providers. Please never start, stop, or change a prescribed medication without talking to the physician who prescribed it.

Can I see a naturopathic doctor and keep my regular doctor or specialist?

Yes. You're welcome to keep your current doctors and specialists. Many patients also choose Pure Body Health as their primary care practice, and either way we coordinate with your other providers and will tell you plainly when specialist or emergency care is what you need.

What is the difference between naturopathic and functional medicine?

They overlap a great deal and, here, they are practiced by the same physicians. Functional medicine is the systems-biology approach we use day to day to find root causes; naturopathic medicine is the licensed field and philosophy behind it, with its own principles and a broader natural-therapeutics toolkit. If you want the approach in detail, see our functional medicine page.

What kinds of conditions or symptoms do people come to you with?

People commonly come to us with chronic fatigue, hormone and thyroid concerns, gut and digestive issues, stubborn weight and metabolic changes, joint and musculoskeletal pain, brain fog, poor sleep, and autoimmune activity, often after being told everything looks normal. We do not claim to cure disease; we work to find and address the underlying drivers, and we refer out when a problem needs conventional or specialist care.

Are these therapies FDA-approved?

It depends on the therapy, and we are straight about it. Conventional lab diagnostics are standard medicine. Some hormone therapies are FDA-approved, while compounded bio-identical hormones, peptides, prolotherapy, and ozone-based therapies are not FDA-approved and are used, when appropriate, under a physician's direction. GLP-1 medications are FDA-approved prescription drugs we use only when clinically appropriate. Environmental and specialty testing informs your plan but is not a diagnosis on its own, and nutrients and botanicals are dietary supplements, not evaluated by the FDA to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. Results vary.

Is it covered by insurance, and what does it cost?

Coverage varies. Some conventional lab work may be billable to insurance, while naturopathic visits and specialty panels often are not. We are transparent about costs before anything is ordered and will walk through the plan and the investment at your consultation.

Do you serve Phoenix, Chandler, Gilbert, and the East Valley?

Yes. Pure Body Health is in South Tempe, just off I-10 at Elliot Road on South Priest Drive, and we see naturopathic patients from across the Valley, including Phoenix, Ahwatukee, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, and Scottsdale.

This page is educational and supports general wellness. It is not medical advice, is not a substitute for conventional or emergency care, and is not intended to diagnose, treat, prevent, or cure any disease. Do not start, stop, or change a prescribed medication on your own. Diagnostic testing, prescription therapies, and treatment plans are provided only after a comprehensive evaluation by a licensed physician. Several therapies described here are used off-label or are dietary supplements. These services are not appropriate for everyone, candidacy is determined by a provider, and individual results vary.
