Health optimization at Pure Body Health is physician-led care aimed at how well you feel and function, not just whether a lab value is flagged as abnormal. It starts with a detailed history and targeted labs, then builds a plan across the areas that tend to move together: hormones, metabolism and weight, gut health, nutrient status, immune resilience and mood. Care is provided by licensed naturopathic physicians Dr. Scott Maymon, ND, MPH and Dr. Sarah Stone, ND in South Tempe.

It isn't a single treatment or a one-size protocol, and it can be part of your primary care with us or complement care you receive elsewhere. Most plans are reviewed and adjusted over a few months, and individual results vary.

▶The approach

What health optimization actually means.

Conventional care is built to find disease. Health optimization asks a different question: why don't you feel your best when your labs come back "normal"?

Reference ranges on a lab report describe a wide slice of the population, and plenty of people feel off while sitting inside them. Optimization looks at where your numbers fall within those ranges, how they relate to each other and how they line up with your symptoms. It's also where the growing interest in longevity and healthspan fits: the goal is more good years, not just fewer bad ones.

At Pure Body Health, that work is grounded in functional medicine and naturopathic medicine. That means looking for root causes, using the least invasive option that fits and saving medications and procedures for when they're the right tool.

▶Not sure where to start?

Start with a consultation and labs.

You don't have to pick a service. Tell us what's going on, and a physician will recommend which labs are worth running and where a plan should begin.

▶Whole-person care

How the systems connect.

Hormones, gut health, metabolism and sleep push on one another, which is why fixing one thing at a time often stalls.

A sluggish thyroid can make weight loss feel impossible. Poor sleep raises stress hormones, which can nudge blood sugar and cravings upward. Gut inflammation can affect nutrient absorption, and low iron or B12 can look a lot like depression or burnout. Perimenopause can disrupt sleep, which then affects mood, energy and appetite.

That's why a plan here usually starts with a wider lens: a detailed history, targeted labs and a look at how your symptoms cluster. From there, your physician decides what to address first so each step makes the next one easier.

▶The process

How a plan comes together.

01

History and targeted labs

A thorough conversation about your symptoms, health history, medications and goals, followed by labs chosen to answer specific questions.

02

An individualized plan

Your physician reviews results with you and builds a plan that fits your priorities, budget and the rest of your care.

03

Treatment and support

That may include nutrition and lifestyle changes, supplements, hormone care, IV therapy or peptides, depending on what your results show.

04

Retest and adjust

Check-ins and follow-up labs, often every six to twelve weeks early on, show what's working so the plan can be refined.

▶Local factors

Health optimization in the Arizona heat.

Long, hot summers make hydration, sleep and recovery year-round concerns in the Valley, and they show up in how people feel.

From May through September, heat and dry air make it easy to run low on fluids and electrolytes, especially for people who hike South Mountain, run Tempe Town Lake or golf before the heat of the day. Hot nights can also cut into deep sleep, which affects energy, mood and appetite.

We factor that into plans with practical steps like hydration and electrolyte guidance, sleep support and, where appropriate, IV hydration. IV therapy supports hydration and nutrient status; it isn't a treatment for heat illness, which always needs emergency care.

Good to know

Health optimization can be part of your primary care at Pure Body Health or complement care you receive elsewhere. Please don't stop or change a prescribed medication without talking to your prescriber. Individual results vary. This page is educational and isn't medical advice.

▶FAQ

Health optimization, answered.

What is a health optimization clinic?

A health optimization clinic focuses on how well you feel and function, not just on diagnosing disease. At Pure Body Health, licensed naturopathic physicians use a detailed history and targeted labs to build a plan across hormones, metabolism, gut health, nutrient status, immunity and mood.

How is health optimization different from functional medicine?

They overlap. Functional medicine is the root-cause framework our physicians use. Health optimization describes the goal: improving energy, weight, sleep, mood and long-term health, often in people whose standard labs look normal.

Do I need lab work to get started?

Most plans include labs, because testing is how we match treatment to what's actually going on. Your physician will recommend which tests are worth running based on your symptoms and history, and you can use recent labs you already have.

Can I use my insurance for labs?

Often, yes. We don't bill insurance directly for visits, but many insurers cover lab work, and we can provide a service summary for possible reimbursement. Many patients also use HSA or FSA funds.

Can Pure Body Health be my primary care provider?

Yes. Many patients choose Pure Body Health as their primary medical practice, and health optimization fits naturally into that care. If you'd rather keep a doctor you already see, we'll coordinate with them. When specialty or emergency care is needed, we'll guide you to the right level of care.

How long before I notice a difference?

It depends on what's driving your symptoms. Some changes, such as better sleep or energy, can show up within weeks, while hormone and weight changes usually take a few months. Individual results vary, and follow-up labs help track progress.

Do you offer hormone therapy for both women and men?

Yes. We offer hormone care for women through perimenopause and menopause, and hormone optimization for men, including testosterone care after a full evaluation. Both are monitored with follow-up labs.

How much does health optimization cost, and can I use HSA or FSA?

Cost depends on your labs, visit type and any therapies in your plan, and you'll see pricing before anything is scheduled. Naturopathic visits and many services are commonly eligible for HSA and FSA funds; check with your plan administrator.

Do you see patients from Chandler, Ahwatukee, Mesa and Gilbert?

Yes. Our clinic is at 1553 W Todd Drive, Suite 106, in South Tempe, just off I-10 at Elliot Road. Ahwatukee is about 12 minutes away, Chandler about 20, and patients also come from Mesa, Gilbert, Phoenix and Scottsdale.
