Environmental medicine looks at how your surroundings, mold from water-damaged buildings, everyday chemicals, and heavy metals, may be driving chronic symptoms that have not been explained, then builds a plan to lower those exposures and support your body's own clearance. At Pure Body Health it is led by licensed naturopathic physicians who take a careful history, use targeted testing where it helps, and rule out other causes along the way.

Here is the honest part: parts of this field, including frameworks like CIRS, are still debated in conventional medicine, and we will always give you the transparent version of what is established and what is not. This care supports your general wellness, and results vary. Please never stop a prescribed medication without discussing it with the prescriber.

▶Physician-reviewed

Real medical care, not a detox kit.

This is medicine, led by Dr. Sarah Stone, ND (AZ Naturopathic License #15-1496) and Dr. Scott Maymon, ND, MPH (AZ Naturopathic License #15-1497), Arizona-licensed naturopathic physicians. Both trained at the accredited Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine (now Sonoran University) in Tempe, and Dr. Maymon brings additional public-health and toxicology training. Unlike a pre-packaged cleanse, your evaluation includes a real medical history, objective testing, a differential to rule out other causes, and a review of your current medications.

▶The Approach

When Your Labs Are Normal, but You Still Do Not Feel Well

If you have been told your standard panels look "normal" while you struggle with fatigue, brain fog, recurrent sinus congestion, unexplained joint pain, or multi-system symptoms, the missing piece is sometimes your environment rather than another prescription. Conventional medicine is essential for acute problems and active disease, and we use its diagnostics; environmental medicine adds a look at how mold, chemicals, and metals in your home or workplace may be interacting with your own biology. We use both, and we coordinate with your care team.

Two people in the same water-damaged building can react very differently: one feels fine while the other develops multi-system symptoms. That comes down to individual susceptibility, genetics, how efficiently the body clears compounds, gut and nutrient status, and overall stress load. It is why we start with your history and targeted testing rather than a fixed protocol, and why the plan is built around you.

Yes, there is mold in the desert. Valley homes are not immune: monsoon-season water intrusion, roof and plumbing leaks, and evaporative-cooler and AC condensation all create damp conditions where mold can grow, even in a dry climate. "It is Arizona, there is no mold" is one of the most common misconceptions we correct.

We do not offer juice cleanses or internet detox kits. We offer a physician evaluation, honest testing, and a plan built on the results.

▶Sound Familiar?

Symptoms That Send People Looking for Answers

Environmental exposures can show up as a confusing mix of symptoms across the whole body. You may recognize some of these:

  • Debilitating fatigue that rest does not fix
  • Brain fog, word-finding trouble, or memory slips
  • Recurrent sinus congestion or breathing issues
  • Unexplained joint or muscle pain
  • Flushing, hives, or new food and chemical sensitivities
  • Sensitivity to smells, fragrances, or cleaning products
  • Stubborn gut issues that will not settle
  • "Everything comes back normal," yet you feel unwell
  • Symptoms that started after a damp or water-damaged home or workplace
  • Known mold or water damage where you live or work

▶What We Evaluate

Complex Cases Where the Environment May Play a Role

We evaluate environmental contributors in complex, hard-to-explain cases. We do not claim to cure these conditions, and several of the named syndromes are debated in conventional medicine; we are transparent about that and focus on your symptoms, your exposures, and a plan.

Mold & Water-Damaged Buildings

Symptoms that may be linked to biotoxins from damp, water-damaged spaces. "CIRS" (Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome) is the clinical framework often used here; it has a research base but is not universally recognized, and we say so plainly.

Environmental Chemicals & Sensitivities

Reactions some people report to low-level chemical exposures, sometimes described as multiple chemical sensitivity. We take the history seriously, test where it helps, and focus on reducing exposure and supporting the body.

Heavy Metal Exposure

Chronic exposure to metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, or arsenic. We can test where appropriate and focus on identifying and reducing the source; we do not promise a metal "cure."

Mast Cell & Histamine Reactions

Flushing, hives, and food or chemical sensitivities that some patients experience alongside environmental triggers. We evaluate the pattern and the possible contributors.

Persistent Fatigue & Brain Fog

Profound fatigue, post-exertional crashes, and cognitive symptoms, sometimes described as ME/CFS or fibromyalgia, where environmental load may be one contributor among several we assess.

Stubborn Gut, Autoimmune & Hormone Patterns

Resistant gut issues, autoimmune activity, and hormone disruption that can be influenced by environmental exposures, evaluated alongside our GI and hormone care. These are complex conditions, not quick diagnoses. We evaluate environmental factors as one part of a whole-person workup, coordinate with your other providers, and refer out when a problem needs conventional or specialist care.

▶Diagnostic Approach

The Right Testing, and an Honest Word on It

The goal is not more testing. It is the right testing to answer the right clinical questions, chosen for your history and presentation.

Depending on your case, testing may include inflammatory markers, urinary mycotoxin testing, heavy-metal testing, gut and microbiome analysis, organic-acid and metabolic testing, and hormone panels. We use results to inform your plan alongside your history and exam, never as a single stamp of diagnosis.

Being straight about the evidence matters here. Some of the markers used in this field are still debated and are not, on their own, proof of a diagnosis, and provoked ("challenge") heavy-metal testing in particular is interpreted cautiously. We choose tests deliberately, explain what each result does and does not mean, and combine them with sound clinical judgment.

▶What To Expect

How We Work, Step by Step

A careful, monitored process, not an aggressive or unmonitored cleanse.

Laboratory samples prepared for the testing that guides environmental medicine in South Tempe, AZ

01

Step 1. Extended physician intake

A 60 to 90 minute visit covering your full exposure and residential history, water-damage history, symptom timeline, and prior diagnostics.

02

Step 2. Targeted, objective testing

Only the panels that answer real questions for your case, with an honest explanation of what each can and cannot tell us.

03

Step 3. Reduce exposure first

The most important step is lowering ongoing exposure. We help you interpret home testing (such as ERMI or HERTSMI-2) and, when warranted, suggest a qualified environmental or remediation professional.

04

Step 4. Support your body's own clearance

Physician-directed, monitored support that may include targeted binders (some prescription, some supplement), support for the liver's natural processing pathways, nutrients to support mitochondrial function and the body's antioxidant systems, and gut repair. Several of these are used off-label and are chosen and monitored by your physician.

05

Step 5. Re-evaluate and build resilience

Follow-up testing and check-ins to see how you are responding, adjust the plan, and support your body for the long term. We will monitor and guide you throughout the process to better ensure positive health outcomes.

Where the Evidence Stands

We take an evidence-informed, transparent stance, because you deserve the honest version. Peer-reviewed work from respected bodies link damp, water-damaged indoor spaces and airborne particulates with respiratory disease, inflammation, and cognitive effects. That connection is well established.

Some specific frameworks are still debated. Diagnostic models such as CIRS, and some of the individual lab markers used in this field, remain actively discussed within conventional medicine, and standardized treatment guidelines for low-level chronic biotoxin exposure are still developing. We are open about that difference of views. We use validated testing where we can, rely on clinical judgment, coordinate with your other providers, and never present a debated framework as settled fact or promise a cure.

▶How It Fits Together

Environmental Medicine and Standard Care, Side by Side

These are not rivals. Conventional medicine is essential for acute problems and active disease; environmental medicine focuses on chronic symptoms that may be linked to exposures. We use both, and we coordinate with your existing care.

▶Why Pure Body Health

Honest, Physician-Led, and On Your Side

This is a field with a lot of noise. Here is what a licensed, honest, physician-led practice adds.

You are heard, not dismissed

Elsewhere: "your labs are normal, it is all in your head." We take your history and symptoms seriously and look for what standard panels can miss.

Real medicine, not a detox kit

Elsewhere: one-size internet cleanses and pre-packaged "detox" programs. A licensed physician runs the evaluation, orders and interprets testing, and monitors your plan.

Honest about what is debated

Elsewhere: contested frameworks sold as settled science and guaranteed cures. We tell you what is established, what is still debated, and what a result does and does not mean. We cannot guarantee outcomes or promise a cure.

Built around you, not a template

Elsewhere: the same protocol for every patient with the same complaint. Your plan is based on your history, your test results and your goals, and it changes as those change.

▶FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is environmental medicine?

Environmental medicine looks at how your surroundings, things like mold from water-damaged buildings, everyday chemicals, and heavy metals, may be contributing to chronic symptoms that have not been explained. Our licensed naturopathic physicians take a careful exposure history, use targeted testing where it helps, and build a plan focused on lowering exposure and supporting your body's own clearance. It supports your general wellness, works alongside your conventional care, and is not a substitute for it.

What is mold or CIRS illness, and do you evaluate it?

Yes, we evaluate environmental contributors in complex, hard-to-explain cases. "CIRS" (Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome) is a clinical framework, associated with the work of Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker, that links symptoms in some genetically susceptible people to biotoxins from water-damaged buildings. It has a research base but is not universally recognized in conventional medicine, and we are transparent about that. We focus on the symptoms you are experiencing, the exposures in your history, and a plan to reduce them and support your body. We do not promise a cure, and results vary.

Can mold in my home affect me even if my family feels fine?

It can. People respond very differently to the same environment. Genetics, differences in how the liver processes compounds, gut health, nutrient status, and overall stress load all shape how someone reacts to an exposure that another person clears without trouble. That is a large part of why this work is so individual, and why we start with your history and testing rather than a fixed protocol.

Is mold illness real and recognized?

The evidence is layered, and we will always give you the honest version. Damp, water-damaged indoor spaces are well documented by bodies like the World Health Organization and the Institute of Medicine to be linked with respiratory and inflammatory effects. At the same time, specific frameworks such as CIRS remain actively debated in conventional medicine. We take an evidence-informed stance: we use validated testing where we can, we are clear about what is established and what is still debated, and we combine that with clinical judgment.

How do you test for environmental illness?

Testing is chosen for your case, not ordered en masse. Depending on your history it may include inflammatory markers, urinary mycotoxin testing, heavy-metal testing, gut and microbiome analysis, and hormone panels. Some of the markers used in this field are still debated and are not, on their own, proof of a diagnosis; we use testing to inform your plan alongside your history and exam, and we tell you what a result does and does not mean.

What is the difference between a generic detox diet and physician-led environmental medicine?

A lot. Generic "cleanses" and internet detox kits skip the medical evaluation entirely. We do not do those. Physician-led environmental medicine starts with a real medical assessment and objective testing, then supports your body's own elimination pathways with physician-directed, monitored care, and rules out other causes along the way. The goal is safe, individualized support, not a one-size product.

Do I need to leave my house if I suspect mold?

Not necessarily right away, but identifying and addressing the source matters. It is hard for the body to recover while you are still living or working in an actively water-damaged space. Our role is on the medical side: we order mycotoxin testing, CIRS panels and MCAS panels, then review your results with you to see how your body is responding. For evaluating the home itself, we suggest bringing in a qualified environmental or remediation professional.

How does this relate to functional and naturopathic medicine?

Environmental medicine is one focus within our broader naturopathic and functional medicine practice, and it is led by the same physicians. Functional medicine is the systems-biology framework behind the evaluation; naturopathic medicine is the licensed field and philosophy. If you want those in detail, see our functional medicine and naturopathic medicine pages.

Is it covered by insurance, and what does it cost?

Although we do not directly take insurance, some patients choose to submit for reimbursement of services. Some conventional lab work may be billable to insurance while specialty environmental panels often are not. We are transparent about costs before anything is ordered, and we will talk through the plan and the investment at your consultation.

Do you serve Phoenix, Chandler, Gilbert, and the East Valley?

Yes. Pure Body Health is in South Tempe, just off I-10 at Elliot Road on South Priest Drive, and we see environmental-medicine patients from across the Valley, including Phoenix, Ahwatukee, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, and Scottsdale.
