Naturopathic medicine is a distinct branch of medicine focused on root-cause, whole-person care, and at Pure Body Health it is practiced by licensed naturopathic physicians, not coaches or unlicensed practitioners. Naturopathic doctors are trained in both conventional diagnostics and natural therapies, which is what makes a genuine root-cause approach possible. The questions below cover how care works here, what a first visit is like, costs and insurance, and the services we offer.

Looking for a more personalized approach to healthcare? If you've been left with unanswered questions, rushed appointments, or a treatment plan that doesn't feel personalized, you're not alone. Our physicians take the time to understand your complete health story and build an individualized plan around your long-term goals. We provide primary and specialty care, but we're not an urgent care or emergency facility. If you believe you're having an emergency, call 911. This page is educational, not medical advice.

Naturopathic medicine & our doctors: The basics, answered honestly.

What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct branch focused on "root-cause, whole-person care that supports the body's own capacity to heal, using natural therapies alongside modern diagnostics." At Pure Body Health it is practiced by licensed naturopathic physicians who take a full history, order testing that fits your situation, and build an individualized plan. It can serve as your primary care or complement the specialists you already see.

Are naturopathic doctors real doctors?

Yes. Arizona licenses and regulates naturopathic medical doctors (NMDs), and in Arizona the titles ND and NMD mean the same thing. Dr. Sarah Stone, ND and Dr. Scott Maymon, ND, MPH completed four-year doctoral training at the accredited Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine (now Sonoran University) (now Sonoran University) in Tempe and hold Arizona naturopathic licenses you can verify (#15-1496 and #15-1497). They are trained in both conventional medical diagnostics and natural therapies, not unlicensed coaches.

What's the difference between an ND, an NMD, and an MD?

In Arizona, ND and NMD mean the same thing: a naturopathic medical doctor licensed by the Arizona Naturopathic Physicians Medical Board. Arizona NMDs complete four-year doctoral training at an accredited naturopathic medical school, where they study the basic sciences, diagnostics, and pharmacology alongside natural therapies, and they're licensed to diagnose, order labs, and prescribe. An MD (Doctor of Medicine) is a separate degree from a conventional medical school. The difference is training philosophy and range of tools, not whether you're seeing a licensed physician.

How are naturopathic doctors trained?

Naturopathic physicians earn a doctoral degree from an accredited naturopathic medical school, where training covers the basic sciences, diagnostics, and pharmacology much like conventional medicine, plus additional modalities such as botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, regenerative medicine, environmental medicine, and mind-body techniques. The core difference is a philosophy centered on the root cause and the whole person.

What is the difference between naturopathic and functional medicine?

They overlap heavily. Naturopathic medicine is a licensed medical field whose principles include treating the root cause and the whole person, so a licensed naturopathic doctor is already trained to practice that way. Functional medicine is the broader root-cause framework, and at Pure Body Health our functional medicine care is delivered by these same licensed naturopathic physicians, so the two go together.

Who are the doctors at Pure Body Health?

Your care is provided by two licensed naturopathic medical doctors who have both cared for the Valley since 2015, with 20+ years of combined experience. Dr. Sarah Stone, ND (AZ License #15-1496) focuses on women's hormones and menopause, fertility, autoimmune and gut health, and regenerative injections. Dr. Scott Maymon, ND, MPH (AZ License #15-1497) focuses on men's health, hormones, pain and regenerative injections, and functional medicine.

▶FAQ

Becoming a patient.

What should I expect at my first visit?

Your initial visit typically lasts 60 to 75 minutes. A physician takes a thorough history and intake, performs relevant exams, and reviews any past lab work or imaging. The focus is getting to know you as a whole person and thinking critically about your case, so the plan that follows is built around the root cause rather than a default protocol.

Do I need a referral or a diagnosis to book?

No. You do not need a referral or an existing diagnosis to become a patient. The most useful first step is a consultation, where a physician can take a full history and map the options for your situation. You can request an appointment through the contact form or by calling (480) 427-0442.

Do you see patients of all ages?

Yes. Our physicians provide individualized natural and functional care to patients of all ages. People come to us with a wide range of concerns, both acute and chronic, and each plan is tailored to the individual rather than a one-size approach.

Can Pure Body Health be my primary healthcare provider?

Yes. Many of our patients choose Pure Body Health as their primary medical practice for preventive care, acute concerns, chronic disease management, hormone optimization, and long-term health planning. Our physicians combine evidence-based conventional medicine with advanced, personalized approaches to help you reach your health goals. When specialty care or emergency treatment is needed, we'll guide you to the appropriate level of care and work collaboratively so your care stays well coordinated. Our priority is simple: helping you receive the right care, at the right time, for your unique needs.

Do you handle medical emergencies?

No. We're not an urgent care or emergency facility and don't take emergency medical cases. If you believe you're experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 immediately or go to the nearest emergency room. Pure Body Health provides scheduled primary care and root-cause, whole-person care.

Start with a consultation.

Bring your questions. You will get an honest read on whether this is the right fit for you, what a plan looks like, and what it costs, with no obligation to book.

▶FAQ

What it costs, plainly.

Do you take insurance?

We do not accept or bill insurance directly. We provide a service summary with billing information that you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement if you choose, and insurance will often cover related fees such as lab work or medical imaging. Because plans are individualized, costs are discussed with you before anything is scheduled.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash, check, credit card, debit card, and Health Savings Account (HSA) payments. Many patients also use a Flexible Spending Account (FSA). If budget matters, tell us and we will be straightforward about priorities and options.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

In most cases, yes. Naturopathic visits and many services are commonly eligible for Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) funds, and we can provide a service summary for your records. Eligibility depends on your specific plan, so it is worth confirming with your HSA or FSA administrator.

How much does care cost?

Because care is individualized, the cost depends on your situation and the plan you and your physician decide on together, and it is discussed with you before anything is scheduled. Naturopathic and many of our services are often not covered by insurance, though some plans cover certain lab testing. If budget matters, tell us and we will be straightforward about priorities and options.

▶FAQ

Conditions, services, and where we are.

What conditions and concerns do you help with?

People come to us for primary and preventive care and for a wide range of concerns, both acute and chronic: hormones, thyroid and adrenal health, gut and digestive issues, autoimmune and chronic conditions, fatigue, weight, mental and mood health, men's and women's health, fertility, pain, and symptoms tied to their environment. We evaluate the contributors and build an individualized plan rather than promising a fix for any single diagnosis.

What services and treatments do you offer?

Care spans naturopathic and functional medicine, hormone and thyroid optimization, gut and immune health, IV therapy, regenerative injections and PRP, peptides, PEMF, natural aesthetics, environmental medicine, men's and women's health, natural pain relief, and body contouring. Naturopathic medicine is the thread through all of it, so the services are coordinated rather than scattered. The full list is in the services index below, and each service page explains the approach and the honest limits.
