Gut health care in South Tempe
A gut health doctor at Pure Body Health looks for the root cause of digestive symptoms, an imbalanced microbiome, food triggers, stress, or motility, and builds a plan around your diet, your gut, and your daily habits. This care is led by licensed naturopathic physicians who take a thorough history, use targeted testing where it helps, and coordinate with any gastroenterologist or other specialist you see.
We help with common patterns like bloating and gas, reflux, constipation, abdominal discomfort, IBS, SIBO, and dysbiosis. This care supports your general wellness, can be part of your primary care with us, is not a cure, and results vary. For symptoms that need conventional testing or a procedure, we refer promptly, and please never stop a prescribed medication on your own.
▶Physician-reviewed
Digestive care led by a licensed physician.
Your gut health plan is led by Dr. Sarah Stone, ND (AZ Naturopathic License #15-1496), whose clinical focus includes autoimmune and gastrointestinal care, with Dr. Scott Maymon, ND, MPH (AZ Naturopathic License #15-1497). Both are Arizona-licensed naturopathic physicians who trained at the accredited Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine (now Sonoran University) here in Tempe. Your evaluation includes a real medical history, targeted testing where it helps, a review of your current medications, and coordination with your other providers.
▶The approach
More Than Symptom Relief: Care That Looks for the Cause
Your digestive system does more than break down food. It absorbs nutrients, houses a large part of your immune system, and communicates constantly with the rest of the body. It is estimated that nearly 70 million Americans live with some form of digestive disease, and many have been offered medication to quiet symptoms without a clear look at what is driving them. That is the gap naturopathic gut care is built to fill.
Rather than treating bloating, reflux, or irregularity as isolated problems, we look at the whole picture: what you eat, the balance of microbes in your gut, how well you digest and absorb, stress, sleep, and the medications and history you bring with you. Conventional gastroenterology is essential for diagnosis, procedures, and serious disease, and we use it and coordinate with it; our role is to add a root-cause, whole-person layer and to support your body in doing its job well.
The goal is not just fewer symptoms today. It is understanding why they are happening, and supporting your gut so it can work the way it is meant to.
▶Sound familiar?
When Digestion Runs Your Day
Gut symptoms have a way of shaping everything else, what you eat, how you sleep, how you feel. You may recognize some of these:
- Bloating or gas that builds through the day
- Heartburn or reflux after meals
- Constipation, or going days without a bowel movement
- Loose stools or urgency, sometimes alternating with constipation
- Cramping or abdominal discomfort
- A growing list of foods you feel you cannot eat
- Feeling worse under stress, or stress that seems to start in your gut
- Fatigue, brain fog, or skin issues you suspect are tied to digestion
- Being told your tests are "normal" while you still feel off
- Relief from a medication that stops working when you stop taking it
▶What we help with
Common Digestive Concerns We Support
The top digestive concerns we see at our South Tempe clinic are abdominal pain and discomfort, reflux, bloating and gas, constipation, and dysbiosis. We support these with root-cause care; we do not claim to cure them, and for anything that needs conventional diagnosis or a procedure, we refer and coordinate.
Abdominal Pain & Discomfort
Cramping and discomfort can stem from food sensitivities, stress, an imbalanced microbiome, or a digestive disorder. We work to identify the pattern behind it and support your body, and we refer promptly for anything that needs conventional evaluation.
GERD & Reflux
Reflux is often about more than stomach acid alone: diet, meal timing, weight, stress, and digestion all play a part. We look at the contributors and support the gut rather than only suppressing symptoms, working alongside your other care.
Bloating & Gas
Bloating and gas are frequently tied to IBS, food sensitivities, or SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), and can be aggravated by stress and certain foods. We help pinpoint likely triggers and rebuild digestive balance.
Constipation
Difficulty passing stool or missing regular bowel movements can reflect diet, hydration, motility, the microbiome, and thyroid or hormone factors. We look for the driver and support regular, comfortable digestion.
Dysbiosis
An imbalance in the gut's community of microbes is one of the most common patterns we see, and it can ripple into digestion, immunity, mood, and skin. We work to understand and rebuild a healthier balance.
IBS, SIBO, IBD, Celiac & Food Reactions
We provide supportive, coordinated care for irritable bowel syndrome, SIBO, inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, and food allergies, sensitivities, and intolerances, always alongside your gastroenterologist for diagnosis and disease management.
These are real medical conditions, not quick fixes. We evaluate the contributors, support your body, coordinate with your other providers, and refer out when a problem needs conventional or specialist care.
▶The gut microbiome
Your Microbiome, and Why Balance Matters
The gut microbiome is the vast community of microbes living in your digestive tract. Far from being passive passengers, they help break down food, produce certain nutrients, support the absorption of others, and interact with your immune system and even your mood. When that community is balanced and diverse, digestion tends to run smoothly. When it drifts out of balance, a state called dysbiosis, it can show up as bloating, irregularity, food reactions, and symptoms well beyond the gut.
You may also have heard the term "leaky gut," or increased intestinal permeability. This describes a state in which the intestinal lining becomes more permeable than usual, which some researchers connect to digestive and inflammatory symptoms. It is an area of active research and is understood somewhat differently across conventional and naturopathic medicine, and we will always give you the honest version of what is established and what is still being studied. Our focus is practical: support the health of the gut lining and the microbiome through food, targeted nutrients, and reducing triggers, and watch how you respond.
▶How we help
A Root-Cause Plan, Built Around You
Four areas we work in together, chosen for your case rather than a fixed protocol.
01
Targeted testing that informs the plan
Where it helps answer a real question, we may use DNA-based stool and microbiome analysis, markers of digestion and inflammation, food-sensitivity evaluation, or breath testing for SIBO. Testing informs your plan alongside your history and exam; it is not a diagnosis on its own, and we explain what each result does and does not mean.
02
Food and nutrition, first
Diet is often the most powerful lever in gut health. We help you identify likely trigger foods, support digestion, and build an eating pattern that fits your life, rather than a rigid, permanent elimination diet.
03
Targeted supplements and botanicals
When appropriate, physician-directed nutrients, probiotics, and botanicals to support digestion and a healthier microbiome. We review everything you already take for interactions. Dietary supplements are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease and are used as part of a supervised plan.
04
Lifestyle: stress, sleep, and movement
The gut and nervous system are in constant conversation. Practical support for stress, sleep, and movement is part of the plan, because they shape digestion as much as what is on your plate.
When to Seek Conventional Care Right Away
Some digestive symptoms need prompt conventional evaluation, and we will help you get it. See a medical provider without delay for unintentional weight loss, blood in the stool, black or tarry stools, difficulty or pain with swallowing, persistent vomiting, a new onset of significant symptoms at an older age, or a strong family history of gastrointestinal cancer or inflammatory bowel disease.
Naturopathic gut care works alongside conventional gastroenterology; it does not replace diagnosis, procedures such as endoscopy or colonoscopy, or the management of serious disease. We coordinate with your GI doctor and refer promptly when your symptoms call for it. Please never stop or change a prescribed medication on your own.
▶How it fits together
Root-Cause Gut Care and Conventional GI, Side by Side
These are not rivals. Conventional gastroenterology is essential for diagnosis, procedures, and serious disease; our approach adds a root-cause, whole-person layer. Most patients do best with both, coordinated.

▶Why Pure Body Health
Physician-Led, Root-Cause, and On Your Side
There is a lot of noise in gut-health marketing. Here is what a licensed, physician-led practice adds.
Elsewhere: a seven-minute visit and a prescription to suppress symptoms.
You are heard, not rushed
We take the time to understand your history and what is actually driving your digestion.
Elsewhere: one-size gut "resets" and internet supplement stacks.
Real medicine, not a cleanse
A licensed physician runs the evaluation, orders and interprets testing, and monitors your plan.
Elsewhere: each symptom treated on its own.
Root cause, whole person
We connect diet, microbiome, stress, and history, because your gut does not work in isolation.
Elsewhere: "skip your GI doctor and just do this."
Coordinated, not either-or
We work alongside your gastroenterologist, refer promptly for red-flag symptoms, and never ask you to stop a prescribed medication on your own.

▶FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a gut health doctor do?
At Pure Body Health, gut health care is led by licensed naturopathic physicians who look for the root cause of digestive symptoms rather than only quieting them. That means a thorough history, targeted testing where it helps, and a plan built around your diet, your microbiome, and the daily habits that shape digestion. We coordinate with any gastroenterologist or other specialist you see. This care supports your general wellness and can be part of your primary care with us.
Can naturopathic medicine help with IBS, SIBO, or reflux?
Many people come to us for support with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), reflux, bloating, and constipation. Our approach is to understand what is driving your symptoms, food triggers, an imbalanced microbiome, stress, or motility, and to support your body with diet, targeted nutrients or botanicals, and lifestyle changes. We do not promise a cure, and results vary from person to person. For anything that needs conventional testing or procedures, we refer and coordinate.
What is dysbiosis, and how do you evaluate it?
Dysbiosis describes an imbalance in the community of microbes living in your gut. It is one of the most common patterns we see. To understand your case we may use a careful history, symptom review, and, where it helps, DNA-based stool and microbiome analysis. Testing is used to inform your plan alongside your history and exam, not as a diagnosis on its own. From there we focus on rebuilding a healthier balance through food, targeted support, and habits.
What is leaky gut?
"Leaky gut," or increased intestinal permeability, describes a state in which the lining of the intestine becomes more permeable than normal, which some researchers link to digestive and inflammatory symptoms. It is an area of active research and is understood differently across conventional and naturopathic medicine, and we are transparent about that. We focus on supporting the health of the gut lining through diet, nutrients, and reducing triggers rather than making promises about a single fix.
Do you do stool or microbiome testing?
When it helps answer a real clinical question, yes. Depending on your case, testing may include DNA-based stool and microbiome analysis, markers of digestion and inflammation, food-sensitivity evaluation, or breath testing for SIBO. We choose tests deliberately, explain what each result does and does not mean, and use them to inform your plan alongside your history and exam. We do not order panels for their own sake.
Do I still need my gastroenterologist?
Very possibly, and that is a good thing. Conventional gastroenterology is essential for diagnosis, procedures such as endoscopy and colonoscopy, and the management of conditions like inflammatory bowel disease. We work alongside your GI doctor, not in place of them, and we refer promptly for red-flag symptoms. Please never stop a prescribed medication on your own.
Are supplements and botanicals safe with my other medications?
That is exactly why physician-led care matters. Supplements and herbs can interact with prescription medications, so we review everything you take, choose products thoughtfully, and monitor how you respond. Dietary supplements are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and we use them as part of a supervised plan, not as a replacement for care you need.
When should digestive symptoms be checked right away?
Some symptoms need prompt conventional evaluation, including unintentional weight loss, blood in the stool, black or tarry stools, difficulty swallowing, persistent vomiting, a first onset of significant symptoms at an older age, or a strong family history of GI cancer or inflammatory bowel disease. If you have any of these, we will help you get the right conventional workup quickly. This page is educational and is not a substitute for medical care.
Is gut health care covered by insurance, and what does it cost?
Coverage varies. Some conventional lab work may be billable to insurance, while specialty stool and microbiome panels often are not. We are transparent about costs before anything is ordered and will walk through the plan and the investment at your consultation.
Do you serve Phoenix, Chandler, Gilbert, and the East Valley?
Yes. Pure Body Health is in South Tempe, just off I-10 at Elliot Road on South Priest Drive, and we see gut health patients from across the Valley, including Phoenix, Ahwatukee, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, and Scottsdale.
